the ferry across the Rhine

I finally got a bit of sightseeing in while I was in Germany. We headed out seeking a wine festival (Weinfest) in Rudesheim, Germany - a very touristy little village that's right on the Rhine River. We actually had to take a ferry (in our car) to get across the river! We took a gondola trip up the side of the vineyard-covered mountain to see the view of the Rhine valley and the monument up at the top.

We passed up taking a look in the "torture museum" (for some reason that reminds me of that horrible movie, "Hostel" if any of you guys remember when we watched that...). We window-shopped for a bit, Denny bought a sweet leather cap to go with his capri's, and we sat at a cute little outdoor restaurant and drank local wines and Rudesheim coffee (coffee with brandy). The presentation of the coffee was kinda cool - she poured the brandy in the cups, lit it on fire with a lighter, then added sugar to it while stirring it (still on fire) so it gets nice and hot. Then she blew out the flame, poured in the coffee, added a ball of whipped cream and bon apetit! Ha, or whatever, I'm in Switzerland right now and the languages are really getting to me.

Tourists

I don't really understand why, but most of the tourists were old people... they all came in big tour buses and were tasting wine and eating waffles with fruit and ice cream.

Weingartens and Biergartens
lots of tourists. Mostly older people.

Rent-a-Bike and buy liquor!

We bought some wine and liquor filled chocolates before leaving and ended the night with dinner in downtown Kaiserslautern. They serve 2 liter glasses of beer there! I got a pizza-type dish except that the crust is realllllly flat and the toppings are more sparse. I totally can't remember the name of it but I put a photo in here. Of course we stopped for ice cream before leaving, you know me.

the pizza thing, yum!
